Where would YOU be?

Despite the adventurous path God has set me on, I would have never imagined myself relaxing in a hotel room while writing an article for the Soma Family Magazine, looking out my window and gazing across the landscape of…Michigan. People always told me that the purposes and calling of God might take me places I had never dreamed…and they were right! Who would’ve thought this Buckeye born boy from the scarlet and gray state of Ohio would ever have need to visit Michigan?!

As funny as that may seem, there is truth radiating from my experience.

I love my life. I love what I do and I love the people I share my life with. It is times like these; the times I find myself in the center of God’s plan, that fill my heart with gratitude for where I’ve been and where I am going.

And so as I sit here, in my conference hotel room in Michigan, I am reminded that there is one reason I am where I am today.

I can trace my success and fulfillment back to one simple thing in my life…and so can you! I can trace everything back to Relationships.

If it wouldn’t had been for my mom and dad, I wouldn’t have been born and raised with love. If it wouldn’t had been for my relentless ma-ma, I wouldn’t have studied the Word of God when I was only five years old. If it wouldn’t had been for my persistent aunt, I wouldn’t have started my spiritual journey at New Hope church. If it wouldn’t had been for Don Crooks, I wouldn’t have visited the altar. If it wouldn’t had been for Jesus, I wouldn’t have experienced salvation at that altar. If it wouldn’t had been for all my wonderful youth leaders, I might not have stayed in church. If it wouldn’t had been for another man named Don in our church, I might not have considered traveling from Lancaster to Chillicothe to enroll in the Southern Ohio School of Ministry. If it wouldn’t had been for Stan at Open Door, I might not have felt so accepted so quickly at a new large church. And if wouldn’t had been for Mark and Nicki Pfeifer, I would not have found my purpose and calling in life…and I definitely would not be sitting in Michigan at a conference to sell their books and teaching cds!

Can you see the impact those relationships have had on my life?

And those are just a few. I could go on and on, telling the stories of the relationships that are largely responsible for my success.

The point is this: You and I can trace our success back to people who have been a part of our lives, and during this holiday season, what better way to honor God than to honor the people in our lives with thanksgiving in our hearts?

I believe that life is all about loving God and loving people. I didn’t get that belief myself – I got it from Jesus. That’s what He told the pharisees when they asked him of the greatest commandment.

Relationships matter. Not only do they matter – they are essential to your future.

God has His people in a season where we are to nurture the relationships that matter most in our lives.

Think of where you have been and where you are now. I bet you can think of many who played a role to see that you moved forward on your journey.

I challenge you this holiday season to relax and reflect, and remember those around you who have played a significant role in your life. Maybe the Lord would stir in you to give them a call, or send them a thank you, or even buy them a special gift this Christmas. I believe in this season while we link arms with family and friends, God will honor those who let their hearts be overflowing with praise, gratitude and thanksgiving for the good people that our loving Father has placed in our lives.

Where would you be if it had not been for __________________ ?

(FIll in the blank and let your heart be filled with thanksgiving!)

Dealing with Change in your Church Pt. 2

One of my passions is fishing the New River in West Virginia. When I was younger my father and several college buddies would put our felt bottom shoes on and take off wading through the river. We would wade along rock ledges, small rapids and shallow ripples in search of a Smallmouth Bass. We fished this way for several years. The thought never occurred to us that there may be a better way to fish the river. A friend of my father’s began to tell us about boats that could float the stream. He described to us fishing opportunities and destinations that we only dreamed of.

For those of you that have never been to the New River it’s not a calm shallow stream, it’s quite wild and dangerous. The temptation was to stick with what was familiar and comfortable, but inside me I felt a stirring to explore a new way that could open up new water and even more and larger fish. I remember the first time I got into one of those one-man pontoons and took off; it was fishing at another level, and it was awesome!!!! No more fighting upstream, no more limitations due to rapids or water too deep to wade, the change was worth it!

The change was necessary!

The second step to successfully dealing with

change in your church is to realize that

Change is NEVER easy!

It’s not easy birthing new ministries.   It’s not easy seeing key people

leave your church. It’s not easy turning a ship that has gone the same direction for 50 years, or even 50 weeks.  It’s not easy transitioning from one season to another in your church.  It’s not easy having limited access to your pastor due to growth.  These aspects of change are not easy, but we must accept them, embrace them, and learn to welcome them as God’s way of equipping the church to build the kingdom.

Dealing with Change in your Church

God is in the change business. If something is alive it WILL change. If our churches are to grow and sustain life they MUST change as the Holy Spirit directs. In the business world change is the name of the game. To compete and thrive companies must change and adapt to an ever changing culture. The church must be able to not only deal with change but welcome it.

For the next few weeks, we will discuss how you successfully deal with change in your church.

The first step to successfully dealing with

change in your church is to realize that

Change is NATURAL

Remember, the church is not a corporation, but it’s a living organic body. It would be very unnatural if the human body never changed. We were designed to grow; we were designed to undergo transition and transformation. Your church is no different. God will naturally bring positive changes through your leaders. If we realize it’s natural for God to do so we’ll be secure enough to allow God to build His church.

Discovering Financial Freedom Pt. 6

We hope you’ve enjoyed the series by Ed Wright, Discovering Financial Freedom.

By following the steps that we have laid out over the last several weeks, you’ll begin to build wealth that will enable you to provide for your family and to become a generous giver to God’s Kingdom.

Here is Action Step #6 to Discovering YOUR Financial Freedom!

After you establish an emergency fund, create a budget, get rid of credit cards, pay off credit card debt and start investing, it’s time for the last step to financial freedom. The last step is to pay off your home early by adding extra payments each month. Wouldn’t it be great to own your home debt-free? Now that you have freed up money from ‘bad’ debt like credit cards, instead of spending your extra money, begin applying it to your house payment and you will begin to shed years off your home loan!

What a feeling to be financially free! It is truly the way God designed us to live. It doesn’t happen all at once and it’s not easy. However, everyone starts somewhere – the important part is that you start…and start now! You are now on your way to financial freedom!

Discovering Financial Freedom Pt. 5

In the fall of 2008 as the economy tanked, many people drew back in fear and some experienced major financial loss. In the midst of all the turmoil, we (the Harvest Christian Community family) found ourselves in a very secure position to weather the financial storm. In fact, this past year, we saw a healthy increase in church giving even as many churches were financially struggling.

We owe much of our stability and increase to learning from Dave Ramsey’s material for several straight months. However, in addition to the curriculum, another reason for our stability is accredited to our willingness and efforts to apply the principles we learned.

If you apply the principles that you read about in this blog, you will be on your way to financial freedom!

Here is Action Step #5 to Discovering YOUR Financial Freedom!

Once you pay off all consumer debt (excluding your home), start maximizing your investments into company IRA’s that match your contributions or a personal Roth IRA. Shoot to invest 15% of your income into your retirement plans. The earlier you can begin, the better.

Remember, every bit counts when it comes to getting out of debt and moving into financial freedom. Start now and start somewhere.

Next week we will take a look at the last step from Ed Wright’s teaching Discovering Your Financial Freedom.

Stay tuned!

Discovering Financial Freedom Pt. 4

In January of 2008, our church family spent 13 weeks learning God’s principles for financial stewardship. During that year, we collectively paid off thousands of dollars of consumer debt and many families set aside lucrative emergency savings accounts.

If our goal is to be debt free in as many areas as possible, then we must have a strategy of how this is possible. And yes it is possible! We have heard many testimonies from our church after our people began applying some of these principles that you are reading about.

Here is Action Step #4 to Discovering YOUR Financial Freedom!

Once you have an emergency savings account setup and have spending under control, it is time to begin paying off all your debt. You may think to yourself, “There is NO way – I am too far behind.” However, if you create a plan and stick with it – you can eliminate debt in your life! It won’t be easy, but if you are determined, it is achievable!

Try using the “snowball” approach. As a snowball rolls downhill, it picks up more snow and more momentum. Start with you lowest credit balance and pay it off as quickly as possible. Once that debt is paid, take that payment and add it to the next debt payment thus “snowballing” your debt repayment. You’ll be surprised how quickly it adds up.

As with all of these principles – you must start somewhere. Even if it feels like your small steps towards financial freedom aren’t big enough, as ong as you keep moving forward you are heading in the right direction!

Discovering Financial Freedom Pt. 3

I firmly believe that the church’s financial condition is based upon the financial wisdom of the families within the church. If we focus on teaching financial management to each and every member in our churches, we are laying the groundwork for the future financial stability and growth of the Kingdom.

Here is Action Step #3 to Discovering YOUR Financial Freedom!

Start to pay cash for everything. Stop using credit cards. Use cash, checks, or debit cards. If you have to use a credit card, you can’t afford it. Save up until you have the cash. Even when you have a tendency to pay the card off at the end of each month,

Remember, everyone starts somewhere. The important thing is that you start NOW!

Discovering Financial Freedom Pt. 2

A common myth is that we don’t have enough money because we are not making enough income. The truth is that no matter how much money we make, without personal financial management, we will always outspend our income and be in debt regardless of the size of our income.

It’s time we take better care of our finances.

Here is Action Step #2 to Discovering YOUR Financial Freedom!

Set up a simple monthly spending plan. If all you do is write down your total income and list your total expenses in a month, you’ll be ahead of the game. By listing every expense for a month, you’ll quickly see where you’re losing control.

Remember, everyone starts somewhere. The important thing is that you start NOW!

Stay tuned next week for Ed Wright’s step number three to financial freedom!

Dicovering Financial Freedom Pt.1

Over the next few weeks, we will be taking some of the action steps that Pastor Ed Wright talked about in his featured article in the last Soma Magazine. Ed believes that the church’s financial condition is based upon the financial wisdom the families within the church. If we focus on teaching financial management to each and every member in our churches, we are laying the groundwork for the future financial stability and growth of the Kingdom.

For the next few weeks we will focus on one of his action steps.

Action Step #1 to Discovering YOUR Financial Freedom

Establish an emergency fund of at least $500 (preferably $1000) to be held in a separate savings account. Before we can be weaned off credit cards, we need to be able to handle the car repairs, broken hot water heaters, dental bills, and a thousand other unforeseen events. Without this, we rely on credit cards to handle the emergencies and we will always be in debt.

What steps are you taking to establish an emergency fund? Remember : it doesn’t take a lot to start somewhere, all that matters is that you start!

Stay tuned for Action Step #2 next week!
