Where would YOU be?

Despite the adventurous path God has set me on, I would have never imagined myself relaxing in a hotel room while writing an article for the Soma Family Magazine, looking out my window and gazing across the landscape of…Michigan. People always told me that the purposes and calling of God might take me places I had never dreamed…and they were right! Who would’ve thought this Buckeye born boy from the scarlet and gray state of Ohio would ever have need to visit Michigan?!

As funny as that may seem, there is truth radiating from my experience.

I love my life. I love what I do and I love the people I share my life with. It is times like these; the times I find myself in the center of God’s plan, that fill my heart with gratitude for where I’ve been and where I am going.

And so as I sit here, in my conference hotel room in Michigan, I am reminded that there is one reason I am where I am today.

I can trace my success and fulfillment back to one simple thing in my life…and so can you! I can trace everything back to Relationships.

If it wouldn’t had been for my mom and dad, I wouldn’t have been born and raised with love. If it wouldn’t had been for my relentless ma-ma, I wouldn’t have studied the Word of God when I was only five years old. If it wouldn’t had been for my persistent aunt, I wouldn’t have started my spiritual journey at New Hope church. If it wouldn’t had been for Don Crooks, I wouldn’t have visited the altar. If it wouldn’t had been for Jesus, I wouldn’t have experienced salvation at that altar. If it wouldn’t had been for all my wonderful youth leaders, I might not have stayed in church. If it wouldn’t had been for another man named Don in our church, I might not have considered traveling from Lancaster to Chillicothe to enroll in the Southern Ohio School of Ministry. If it wouldn’t had been for Stan at Open Door, I might not have felt so accepted so quickly at a new large church. And if wouldn’t had been for Mark and Nicki Pfeifer, I would not have found my purpose and calling in life…and I definitely would not be sitting in Michigan at a conference to sell their books and teaching cds!

Can you see the impact those relationships have had on my life?

And those are just a few. I could go on and on, telling the stories of the relationships that are largely responsible for my success.

The point is this: You and I can trace our success back to people who have been a part of our lives, and during this holiday season, what better way to honor God than to honor the people in our lives with thanksgiving in our hearts?

I believe that life is all about loving God and loving people. I didn’t get that belief myself – I got it from Jesus. That’s what He told the pharisees when they asked him of the greatest commandment.

Relationships matter. Not only do they matter – they are essential to your future.

God has His people in a season where we are to nurture the relationships that matter most in our lives.

Think of where you have been and where you are now. I bet you can think of many who played a role to see that you moved forward on your journey.

I challenge you this holiday season to relax and reflect, and remember those around you who have played a significant role in your life. Maybe the Lord would stir in you to give them a call, or send them a thank you, or even buy them a special gift this Christmas. I believe in this season while we link arms with family and friends, God will honor those who let their hearts be overflowing with praise, gratitude and thanksgiving for the good people that our loving Father has placed in our lives.

Where would you be if it had not been for __________________ ?

(FIll in the blank and let your heart be filled with thanksgiving!)

Dealing with Change in your Church Pt. 3

It’s our ability to accept and embrace change that will determine our effectiveness in bringing about transformation in society.

The final step to successfully dealing with change in your church is to realize that

Change is Necessary!

I didn’t realize it at the time, but now I know that it was necessary that I transition from wading to floating in a boat.  What was once scary and intimidating is now exciting and beneficial.  For our churches to fulfill their kingdom mandate to spread the reign of God on the Earth they must realize that changes have to occur in order to get us from wading upstream against culture to floating alongside the culture and transforming it in the process.

Dealing with Change in your Church Pt. 2

One of my passions is fishing the New River in West Virginia. When I was younger my father and several college buddies would put our felt bottom shoes on and take off wading through the river. We would wade along rock ledges, small rapids and shallow ripples in search of a Smallmouth Bass. We fished this way for several years. The thought never occurred to us that there may be a better way to fish the river. A friend of my father’s began to tell us about boats that could float the stream. He described to us fishing opportunities and destinations that we only dreamed of.

For those of you that have never been to the New River it’s not a calm shallow stream, it’s quite wild and dangerous. The temptation was to stick with what was familiar and comfortable, but inside me I felt a stirring to explore a new way that could open up new water and even more and larger fish. I remember the first time I got into one of those one-man pontoons and took off; it was fishing at another level, and it was awesome!!!! No more fighting upstream, no more limitations due to rapids or water too deep to wade, the change was worth it!

The change was necessary!

The second step to successfully dealing with

change in your church is to realize that

Change is NEVER easy!

It’s not easy birthing new ministries.   It’s not easy seeing key people

leave your church. It’s not easy turning a ship that has gone the same direction for 50 years, or even 50 weeks.  It’s not easy transitioning from one season to another in your church.  It’s not easy having limited access to your pastor due to growth.  These aspects of change are not easy, but we must accept them, embrace them, and learn to welcome them as God’s way of equipping the church to build the kingdom.

Recent Soma Gathering

At a recent Soma Gathering we held in Chillicothe, Ohio, the Lord began to speak as about 50 pastors sat in round-table formation and discussed the season that God has us in. As Fall approaches and signifies change – we are certainly experiencing a lot of changes within the body of Christ. However, just because things are changing, does not mean that God has stopped speaking and moving.

Here are the things that we discussed…

(1) We MUST NOT neglect our personal time with God. We need the strength and direction that ONLY comes from a daily, personal time with our Lord. With busy schedules and ministry obligations, it’s easy to let our personal times with God slip away.

(2) We must walk in personal joy. The joy of the Lord is our strength. This is a season where personal joy is essential if we are going to move forward. God is releasing this joy as we spend time with Him. Although engaged in daily battles, we must nurture our joy and face these issues with joy as our strength. Don’t let yourself get old and crusty!!!

(3) Build strong relationships within your church and outside your church. God is mending His nets, forming strong relationships in this season. It’s not enough any more to have a great platform performance and slick programs fueling the church. Although these things are important, it’s strong, personal relationships with people that make the church strong.

(4) Create Biblical infrastructure in the church. The government of the church must be aligned with the Biblical model in the house and around the house in this season. This means that we must have a functioning government of elders with apostolic oversight, all working within a five-fold ministry context.

(5) Pastor for influence in your city. As civil governments run short on funds and answers for social problems, God is opening doors of opportunity for the church to make a true impact in our cities. This will be the cutting edge of evangelism in the future.
